Sony devices have had custom roms like Cyanogen and AOKP for a while now. The way they have been able to do this is by packaging the boot ramdisk and recovery together into one single boot image. Without actually being able to boot the recovery partition development was harder for these devices, and it was more difficult to recover from a sticky situation.

A few days ago Sony released a set of special bootloaders that enable booting from the recovery partition. This means that developers can now access the recovery without having to modify the build system. This will also make porting roms across devices a bit easier. Devices that will receive the new bootloaders include Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia T3, Xperia M2, and Xperia E3. Other devices will be added later.
