Sorry if this has been asked. I have the marshmallow update. I would like to keep using my sd card as portable not internal. I used to see it under lollipop but now not.. My choices are when I go to the sd card, eject, format or format as internal. Do I have to just format it because now with the latest update I cannot see it on my computer.

Can you see it with File Explorer?

Using file explorer yes. When I mount it on a computer and set for file transfer all I see is a folder called System volume information which is empty. But I can still see that on a 128 gb card 111 is free. The only way I can see whats on it is by removing the sd card and using a sd card reader on my computer.

I had a sort of a similar issue. Poweramp couldn't see my music on my SD card ext. So I had no music..I tried resetting the files it looked for the songs in..nothing. Ejected the SD card and tried again..and it rescanned all the songs..

That's the odd bit. Everything is fine and usable on the card. Pics, music.
Shows empty when connected to a PC. In the main window before you click on the actual card: 39.5 GB free of 59.6.

By default, Marshmallow uses the card as External storage, unless you specifically set it up as Adoptable Internal. You should not need to re format it. As far as a PC not seeing it, lots of folks on Android M are saying that. I can't see mine either from a PC. But my phone can see it and all my music plays so I'm not too worried about the PC aspect. Google still has work to do with Android and SD Card usage in my opinion

So what is the best way to transfer files to the phone from another source?

Have you tried reading the card in your PC once it has been safely ejected from your phone, in an SD Card adapter?

I'm calling BS on this. Seems to be a MOTOROLA issue to me. I just checked my co-workers S7 with 6.0.1: No problem viewing the SD Card on a PC.

I do this all the time and this is extremely inconvenient....

It could be just a Moto issue. That's always possible.
