So where are the instructions to manually update to 2.1 with root

The forum is loaded with 2.1 this 2.1 that, manually updated, blah, blah. It makes it impossible to search how to do the manual update myself. I saw that someone mentioned that their is a version that you can still root. Can someone point me to these instructions please.

Hasn't anybody dumbed this down to a simple set of instructions to get the Official 2.1 update manually? (with or without root) The link given above has 23 pages of stuff that I can barely figure out. Help!

I have a mac. How will I combine the files? It talks about "Open command prompt and run the following command to combine them" I think this is a PC thing. Hasn't anybody posted a combined file already?
