Ok I have searched with no avail. When I delete my messages it goes back to dec 31 1969. Now I have handcent installed. I have tried deleting thru thestock never but that doesn't work either. I have tried 3 different roms and no luck. last x I had before the 2.3 update I could just install ss rom and it would be fixed but not now. Someone has to know what is going on.

It's a negative timestamp glitch based on the Unix epoch (the number of seconds since 1/1/1970).

It sounds like one of the messaging apps is doing an incomplete delete of the messages.

Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>app>clear cache

Try that.

Sometimes on reboot the clock on my phone says "7:00pm 12/31/1969", but it quickly changes to the correct time and date. If you blinked you would miss it.

There is nothing in the cache to clear so I cleared all data and still nothing.

SMS messages from 1969

I too had text messages that would not delete, or more specifically, if I deleted a thread or message, it would come back with the date of 12/31/1969. Stopping the message and clearing data did not work.
Instead of trying to delete each individual thread, I selected "Delete threads" from menu of messaging window. That cleared all messages.

I just solved the problem on my phone. Go to the Android Market and download History Eraser. Have it delete all SMS messages and you will be all set.
