I am completely sick of my original Droid but right now I don't have the cash to upgrade to a better phone. I decided to play around with the phone so I rooted the phone and downloaded ROM MANAGER. I did a backup of my current Rom and now I want to try something new. Does anyone want to help me out with the whole process of downloading and installing a new rom, I really want one that has been proven and works great with minimal problems. I am really hoping that this speeds up my phone a bit....right now it is laggy and horrible.

    Any help would be great.

That's the fun in being rooted. Getting try out new ROMs, recoveries, themes, ect.

I will say that it is all about preference when selecting a ROM. Do you want better battery life? Features? Customization? Speed? You have to take your own tastes into consideration.

A couple of my favorite ROMs are:

    Bugless Beast
    GPA
    CM7
    Liquid Gingerbread
    Sorcery

After you try out a couple, you'll be able to see what's most important to you.

As for installing a ROM, it is extremely simple. Just make sure you already have a custom recovery before beginning. Download a ROM from your computer (don't use ROM manager) and then mount your phone to your PC and transfer the .zip to the root of your SD card. Then boot into recovery and wipe data/cache 3 times. Then install zip from SD. Simple. Simple. Simple.

If you run into any problems, you can always come here for help. :)

Just flash clockwork mod from ROM Manager. You'll likely have flash Clockwork, then SP Recovery, and then Clockwork again.

Ok I will give it a shot. I hate the phone so much right now that if I bricked it I really wouldn't lose any sleep. Maybe after tonight I will like the phone again...I hope so.

After rooting my Droid, I honestly have no desire to upgrade. I'd also suggest MIUI as a Rom. I go back and forth between Simply Stunning (now 5.4) and MIUI. When you flash a different ROM, it's like getting a brand new phone!

GB Roms are known to have 3g problems, lost calls and text and memory shortage killing apps. I have read some threads about better functioning GB roms.. not sure which ones. I would recommend a froyo rom like Sourcery or Gimpsource with the first one being my personal preference.

I think I will play with Liquid for a bit and maybe install Sourcery on the Wifes Droid.

Gingerbread can be amazing on your droid if you just make a few adjustments. I would suggest reading through the thread for whichever version of liquid you have. Make a few tweaks in liquid settings under performance like enable JIT, and enable compcache. Before you do that though, I would use one of Chevyno1's kernels with Liquid gingerbread. They were by far the best for me on that rom.

I was in a similar situation w my d1. I decided to root and flash ROMs.

    Bad idea.

I'm having more fun than I've ever had w my phone. I flash and configure like a junkie.

I'm staying up too late. I'm messing up at work.

Save yourself, go back to stock.

For the record, SS 5.4 is my current fave (I've kept it on for 2 whole days!), w/ PE6 a close 2nd.

    LOL

So let me ask this, if I want to try some different ROMS can I back up each ROM and then go back and forth until I finally find one that I like the best?

Yes. You have the option to restore backups in recovery. Have fun!

So far I am really liking this, I am glad I didn't buy a new phone now completely understand why guys were upset when Motorola decided to lock their bootloader on the newer phones.

Welcome to AA (android annonymous). We are all addicted to flashing roms, and you soon will be too! The only thing I would say is, get rid of rom manager, install rzrecovery and flash the manual way. Just as easy, and much more stable!

I would caution against getting rid of ROM Manager, especially for someone new to rooting. I have used both, but still prefer CM recovery. But, even if you prefer RZ, RM is a nice backup just in case. And please, I am not trying to flame. I know alot of people are cool with RZ, I just think, regardless, it is nice to keep just in case..........
