I have always used it for info and profiles. Mainly because I fear overheating. I have not for a while and tried to watch CPU temp. With os monitor. So far so good.
I don't know if it might conflict with ROM settings.

But what if you flash a different kernel that isn't stock? I would think you need to right? Since now the rom itself is altered.

No, the ROM settings will still set min Max and governor. If you adjust advanced settings for on demand or interactive you have to use set CPU. There are other apps for overclocking too. But the ROM will do basic settings.

So if I use a chevy kernal and use performance setting....do I need setcpu?

Was reading somewhere here a guy was overheating without setcpu then used it and heat went down

I am asking this cause today I was drving in car with droid charging and had a screen on program running....I had many reboots....I'm guessing you can't keep screen on that long?

Or was it the not having setcpu?

Was running chevy ulv 1.1 at 1000 peak

:icon_eek: If you're running 1.1ghz with the Performance governor, there's your problem. Performance keeps the clock speed maxed while the screen is on, even if it's not needed. This will cause a QUICK heat-up, which leads to the reboots. I usually use Interactive, and Chevy himself has said on several posts that he uses OnDemand. Change your governor before you melt your phone!

Um, can't believe no one addressed the op's question as far as 5.5 is concerned, unless he meant 5.4, lol. I've never used set cpu, so since 5.5 isn't released yet, I'm taking a gamble that I won't need it. I just use overclock widget and chevyno1 tools for my overclock settings and profiles.

Just another tidbit as long as you're on charge the minimum the CPU will run is slot 3 speed. I don't think you can slow it below slot 3 while charging.

So that means it stays hotter when charging...

How does anyone watch a movie PR watch a game on MLBtv without overheating?

I'm not sure but I think a lot of the heat issues with D1 have more to do with the radio. Don't think it's as much a problem on wifi.
With nav you have GPS, radio and CPU running hard and add to that charging. I've found if you have an ac vent mount it helps.
Ambiant temp hurts too so on a hot day it's worse.

I'm no expert but lower voltage kernel if you're Droid can run it should help and lower clock maybe. Each Droid is a little different. Experiment with different kernels and settings is all I can say.
One thing that set CPU will do though is if you set a profile and set audible alarm you will know when it heats up.
I bumped my CPU temp profile to 57°C. I figure I'm gonna upgrade soon so if it cooks oh well.
I think the D1 is designed to run at 600mhz Max.
It will shut itself off if it gets too hot but that may still cause damage.
Many of us are constantly pushing the D1 far beyond what it was built for and it hangs in there.
That's why I'm pretty sure I'll stay with Moto.

600mhz with performance governor is the best set up I have found! Try it, I think you'll love it.

I'm not convenced higher speed( to a point) will not reduce load average and thereby run more efficiently.
So you may have something there.
Not based on anything but my feeble poke at logic.

135°F battery should be less maybe less than 50°C 120°F maybe less high temp can cause real problems with battery. I never remember mine getting that hot but CPU has been up to 57° briefly.
