Set notification to silent?

How do I set notifications to silent? When I go to settings there isn't a silent option and when I turn down the notification volume it turns down my ringtone also. I just want the classic two vibrates with notifications. There also isn't an option to do this in my gmail application. I want that to bee completely silent without vibrating. I can't even changer the notifications for my texts in my messaging app (handcent) please help thanks

If you want all notifications silent, go to sound settings and uncheck "use incoming call volume for notifications". For Gmail, menu, select more, settings, select account, labels to notify, inbox and select what you desire.

Your right. Maybe someone can make a Rom to include it. In the meantime, DL Audio Manager. Its free. It has what your looking for.
