SDcard question

I currently have an unlocked bootloader with the intention to root and flash roms. I am wondering how flashing roms will affect the sdcard? Is that portion actually treated like an sd card (unaffected by flashing a rom), or will it be erased when I clear everything before flashing a rom? I'm used to the D1 that actually has an sd card, so I know nothing on there would be lost (pics, music, etc). Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Wipes in recovery don't touch the virtual sdcard, well unless you tell it to at least.
