First off I am running liquid 1.6 stock kernel, and just to let you know I love the work you do liquid. These are my "go to" roms. I have been rooted for a while now and have always see people talk about the sd ext and I have seen the folder in my root explorer. I even notice that when I make a nandroid backup the sd ext is always empty. I was just wondering what are the advantages of using this and how would I go about using. I apologize if I have over looked this somewhere else I have been looking for a couple of days now. Thank you.

You have to format your sd card and use a app like links2sd so you can move apps from internal memory to the partition you made when you formatted. Make sure the kerl you use supports either sdext2 or sdext 3...whichever one you choose to format as. Unlike froyo apps2sd which takes some memory on internal even if you move the app, this form of apps2sd doesn't.

I was told that with Froyo and Gingerbread that the external partition was no longer required to move apps.

Its not but it keeps some data of apps on internal memory still, even if you move to external so technically you still lose internal memory space.

I'm sorry I missed that last line. I guess there are are still some apps that will not perform properly if they are on the sd card.

You shouldn't move system apps to the partition, but other downloaded apps will work fine. even the Widgets work once you mmove them to partition unlike the froyo apps2sd method.

I assume you got it all working. Good to hear. Did you need to install the right ext driver?

Let me clarify some info regarding link2sd. The data will remain on the internal memory, but what is movable is the dex file or dalvik cache. Certain apps like flash and air for example have giant dex files when compared to the size of the apk itself.
rafiki listed one of the best things by far, that you can still use all of your apps widgets even though they aren't on internal memory.
Also there are sometimes issues with the market recognizing apps moved to sd, this is not the case with link2sd.

I assume I will be able to find directions on how to partition my sd card fairly easily?

Edit: I think I've got it. Rom manager will do it for me.

You can use rom manager and out will partition the card for you.
Make sure you copy your SD to a computer first, as the SD needs to be formatted by RM first. When it is done, copy everything back to the SD.

Get Link 2sd from the market.
Go to the site link on that apps market page, for the apps forum thread on xda with a full explanation on how to use the app and any answers to questions that may pop up. The app is easy to use and it keeps getting better.
And I was able to set it up and run it without understanding much about computers and tech, and that was back when it was first introduced very raw and before the app evolved and started doing most of the things it now does for you. It takes a little set up time but well worth any effort.

That sounds awesome. Thank you both danceswithbongs and rafiki 1. You were both a world of help.
