I'm fairly new to the Android side of the world. I'm from Windows Mobile and we had those phones sitting up and begging...one thing I missed from WM was an application called MyMobiler. it basically allowed you to control your phone while it was connected to your computer.

I dug around and found a program called Screencast:
androidscreencast - Project Hosting on Google Code

It's pretty much the same thing. I finally got it working...but you have to have a rooted phone to be able to control it via mouse and keyboard.

Anyways...I wanted to let people know it was out there so they will support the project. For those of us who sit in front of a computer most of the day at work, this kind of software is really helpful.

    Go Support them!

Wow, this is very impressive. If they get the speed up, this will be amazing for making video guides at RootYourDroid.info!

Nice find, there have been a couple people that I've seen that have asked if this function was available. At least I know where to point them now!

I'm kind of confused... what exactly is the benefit of controlling your phone from your PC? Aside from, say, typing text messages a bit faster...

SPEED... well at least once the program gets optimized. This isn't really for small tasks but more for doing thing that are tedious on the phones screen (i.e. editing home screens/themes, doing system configs, ect.) It also lets you do things on your phone while you are doing stuff on another computer (i.e. you don't have to pick the phone up, just switch windows). MyMobiler was GREAT with WM phones. It's seems like a small thing with little use but once you get used to it it's AWESOME... def one of the biggest things I miss from my WM phones.

The main reason I use it is because I hate being at my computer working and then having some phone action cause me to turn, pick up phone unlock it and respond to a SMS, or something. I just click to a window on my machine, and I'm done.

The speed problem from what I can tell is based on the use of the debug bridge for the screenshot, the cycle can't get much faster. I've seen minor improvements by tweaking the code a bit to BufferedImage. The developer has done a good job, and he's got the code out there so anyone with speed or keymapping improvements should jump in.

There is another similar app that does this called PicMe. It currently has a few interface issues on the PC part, but it works and the developer said he will have it working fully soon.

Any Droid users actually get the mouse and keyboard to work yet?? (Yes, I'm rooted)... the screen shows up, I can 'explore' the device but I can NOT control the device (i.e. 'tap' the screen with the mouse.....). Anyone?

LOL! "Darn it, I have to pick up my Droid and look at it again. I hate having to do this all day!"

If that's the case they can just sell virtual cell phone plans and let you use your computer to handle what was designed for a physical handheld device.

    To each their own.....

Although I haven't tried this app yet, and using a mouse definately sounds appealing. I already use a wireless bluetooth keyboard with my Droid via KeyPro, which you can download from the marketplace already. An speed is not an issue, at least that I have noticed. http://www.mymobilegear.com/AndroidKBDriver.php

From the Issues section on the developer site
Issue 13 - androidscreencast - No mouse/keyboard control? - Project Hosting on Google Code
Here is an updated more literal set of steps as requested by sudermatt

    1. Start an emulator and get ScreenCast app running against it (DO NOT HAVE YOUR
    PHONE CONNECTED YET)
    2. adb pull /data/dalvik-cache/data@local@tmp@InjectAgent.jar@classes.dex
    /TEMPclasses.dex
This copies a file from the emulator to local file on my pc
    3. Take emulator down
    4. Connect my rooted droid
    5. adb push /TEMPclasses.dex /data/local/data@local@tmp@InjectAgent.jar@classes.dex
This copies from from local pc to a temporary location on the phone
    6. adb shell
    7. su
    8. mv /data/local/data@local@tmp@InjectAgent.jar@classes.dex /data/dalvik-
    cache/data@local@tmp@InjectAgent.jar@classes.dex
This moves file from the temporary location on the phone, to the permanent location
it needs to be for dalvik-cache to use it.

There are reports that this isn't working for everybody....this worked for me...I had to try it a couple times. don't know if it's pilot or mechanical error....But I'm working fine.
