Smartphones are essential in people’s lives because they integrate the capability of a mini computer into a portable device. These gadgets are becoming more and more popular around the world, and actually most new handset purchases made in the US involve smartphones, Nielsen revealed in a survey. Thanks to the smartphone popularity, there is a strong competition between manufacturers to offer better and faster gadgets. Most enhancements are focused on processors, display size, the operating system, data transfer speeds and battery life.

Samsung has recently come out with a new technology: a flexible smartphone codenamed ”Samsung Galaxy Skin”. The display is very resistant, users can roll it, bend it and even hit it with a hammer and the display will still work. Samsung is expected to begin the production of the flexible AMOLED display in Q2 of 2012. The company uses a plastic polyimide substrate for this display type, not glass. Thanks to the AMOLED technology, the flexible display does not consume much energy and offers good screen brightness. The display’s flexibility also makes the smartphone a very versatile device. For example, the phone can be used as a mouse with the help of mouse-featured apps. Users can also put Galaxy Skin on the table and use it as a smart projector or they can turn it into a watch clock.

Future Galaxy Skin phones could offer remote sensing capabilities which could activate the solar battery charging based on changes in temperature, weather or color. Samsung may have designed the flexible display in order to use it as a trump card in the battle against Apple’s iPhone. The flexibility factor could indeed be an important factor in the purchasing decision for some users.

is just the screen flixable bc if thats the case there isn't really a practical reason for having it on the phone if the phone doesn't flex with it.?

I could see people wearing their smartphones like a wristwatch. The phone's inflexile components into a little bar-shaped case to which the flexi-screen is attached. The screen could also coil into the case, like a window shade, so the entire phone is smaller and more pocketable.

This is crazy. There was a show called Earth Final Conflict in the 90's and characters had these cellphone like smart devices with flexible screen. Check it out if you want to see something really cool that can be done with this technology. I would imagine this will just be the beginning of what can be done.

You can't help but think of old, cheesy sci-fi futuristic movies and shows that came out back when laptops were as thick as encyclopedias. My only concern is if it's flexible, can it tear by accident or become permanently bent? Think of a cheap, laminated card in your wallet. Worse, can it snap in half? Think of a paperclip. Other than that it looks like amazing technology and surprisingly the picture quality looks really good!

My only concern is if it's flexible, can it tear by accident or become permanently bent? Think of a cheap, laminated card in your wallet. Worse, can it snap in half? Think of a paperclip. Other than that it looks like amazing technology and surprisingly the picture quality looks really good!

Sony I believe showed off a flexible screen a few years back. During the demo they had a machine bending it and doing all kind of stuff to it. Seemed pretty durible.

This technology has been in the works for a while. It will, in the end, open up a whole world of opportunities for mobile devices. This will make things more compact to transport, but large enough to use easily. Think of a tablet that you can just roll up, how much easier would it be to carry that around? Also the idea of it being like a window shade works well for this. The options can go on and on.
