Does anyone know of a method to root a Samsung Epic without the assistance from a PC?

Do I backup before or after the root?

I may be wrong but if you backup up before you would not be able to restore nor would they work. At least that was the deal when I rooted. That means that you will lose the data (call log, text message). Not a problem for me. Once you root make a backup of the OS and the apps then install/flash a new rom.

    Hope this helps.

The only problem I'm having is registering at xda so that I can open up the z4 file. Its not letting me register.

That's what I tried. There is a section in the registration where you have to put some kind of a puzzle together and its acting up on my phone for some reason. Its all good though, I'm probably going to root my phone on Sunday with a buddy who wants to root his HTC Evo.

Now before I do this, I will be able to put my phone back to stock later if I choose?

I know I probably sound like I'm worrying too much, but paying almost 300 dollars for a phone and then seeing the warranty floating above my head makes me nervous.

Yes. Make a backup as soon as you root. There should be a process in the Samsung forum. Let me look

I'm not able to find specifics on the samsung site. I believe that z4root does have the ability to unroot.

The standard is after rooting you need to install a recovery system (SPRecovery ClockWork) that is used to make and restore backups, install roms, themes, and kernels.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to locate information on what recovery works on the Epic.

Now that we do not have that nailed down it may be best to delay. Sorry.

And to tell you the truth, I wanted to root my phone because Samsung is horrible about delivering prompt updates. I bought my phone back in December and was told that the 2.2 update was supposed to kick in the day after Christmas.
