So if I Root my DROID what happens to the apps I have already paid for?

Do I have to purchase them again or does Google keep track of all that?

Not only do you have to pay for them again, you pay double the price for losing it. Outrageous……………..

    j/K

All your paid apps will be in the downloads section of the Market

Hookbill is kidding in the first part, and of course entirely right in the second part. Rooting your droid will not affect your apps, your google marketplace, etc.

Don't worry. This is definitely not covered in the FAQ, and congratulations for asking a unique and topical question!

    Cheers,

    Ehud

Thanks! Yes, I did a search before asking and found nothing.

So to elaborate a bit. How does DROID Marketplace "identify" a person. Is it tied into my Google account? Does it recognize some sort of identifier hard coded into the phone?

Now everyone knows how he pads his post count ;)

    OP,
I am pretty sure that it is tied to your Google acct. It seems like I have heard of people getting different phones, and still able to get the apps on their new phone. Not 100% on that though, and I am sure if I am wrong I will get called out on it ;)

WARNING! You WILL lose copy-protected apps!

Unfortunately this isn't true for all paid apps. :frown:

If you had any copy-protected apps, they will be totally gone from the Market altogether. Even if you wanted to pay for them again, you couldn't. They won't even show up in the list. I learned this the hard way today when I finally rooted my phone.

Most paid apps are not copy-protected, and those will still show up in the Market and you can re-download them after you root. But any copy-protected apps will be totally invisible after you root the phone. The two examples I ran into were DocumentsToGo paid version and Astro File Explorer paid version. I could live without Astro, but I have to have the full version of DTG, so I'm going to have to unroot. I would be willing to pay for both of these again if it meant I could keep root on my phone, but like I said, they are totally invisible in the Market, and that is documented in the DTG knowledge base.

I was so happy to finally have all the bloatware gone from my phone, but I'm going to have to put it all back so I can run the app that I need to run.

Off-topic for this thread, but here are the APK files that I renamed when I rooted:

    CalendarGoogle.bak
    CorpCal.bak
    EmailGoogle.bak
    Facebook.bak
GenieWidget.bak (this is News and Weather)
    Gmail.bak
    GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.bak
    GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.bak
SholesQuickOffice.bak (I removed this because I thought I could use DTG)
    Talk.bak
    Twitter.bak
    VVMStub.bak
    com.amazon.mp3.bak

As you have guessed, I don't use GMail for anything. All of my info is in K-9 and TouchDown. I really don't want to go back to a non-root phone, but it's the only way I can see to get my DocumentsToGo app back. :frown::frown::frown:

Did you install a 2.2 rom after rooting, MoDroGuy?

Yes, I installed FRG22. I had FRG01B, then when I wanted to root, I flashed with the stock 2.1 SBF, then installed the 2.1 root update.zip, then installed the FRG22 update.zip. DTG paid version was working fine on FRG01B, so I don't think it is a 2.2 issue. Maybe it is a FRG22 issue, though. The DTG site was pretty explicit that the paid key app will be invisible in the Market if you are using a "modified" ROM. The Astro paid key (which also worked fine on FRG01B non-root) is invisible when I try to find it using FRG22 rooted. If I have time, I will test it with 2.1 rooted and FRG01B rooted (if there is such a thing), but that probably won't be for another day or so.

    Problem solved!

Ok, so it turns out the problem was because I was on FRG22, which the Market doesn't recognize as being legit yet. I fixed it by editing build.prop and changing FRG22/46998 to FRG01B/45394 in the fingerprint (ro.build.fingerprint).
