Like most, I was waiting for 2.1 hoping for some improvements to my phone's speed, etc. I'm to the point I no longer wish to wait and am thinking about rooting right now, but should I choose to do so and 2.1 comes out shortly, how long does it take to unroot and could I still get the OTA after unrooting? Is there a window of time an OTA stays "floating around" waiting for me to download? Can you miss this window by being rooted?

Rooting will disable OTA updates for you. EDIT: Just rooting wont, but using SPRecovery and/or flashing your ROM will disable OTA updates. Usually you do both, I dont know too many people who ONLY root.

The time it takes to root and unroot is completely dependent on your skill and familiarity with the process. With DroidModUpdater, I can do it in about 10 minutes. Manually, it takes me about 25. Could take a noob upwards of 1-2 hours, just because you're less familiar with the process.

Most of us who are rooted are waiting for the Official 2.1 to drop, and then let our favorite devs root and modify it for us.

As soon as you revert to stock, you'll be prompted for the OTA update. There's no window of opportunity (that doesnt make sense), once it's released, it will become the standard, and wont get pulled until the next better version is released.

I doubt that it would take you 10minutes to root and unroot using Droid mod and a half an hour without it. I would say that it would take more around 2 min with Droid mod and ten without it

Im on about my 10th rom, and It took me close to an hour.
    Wipe(x2)
    Clear Cache (x2)
    Flash rom
    Reboot
    Nandroid backup
Mount & rename kernel to update.zip
    Flash Kernel
    Reboot
    Nandroid backup
Mount and rename theme to update.zip
    Flash Theme
    Reboot
    Nandroid backup
Reboot and keep my fingers crossed
If everything is OK, reboot 1 more time and nandroid backup
Mount sdcard, and clean up unneeded nandroid back ups, place ROM, Kernel, and Theme in a folder on card incase I need it later.

OIC. Yeah, I rooted while driving down the road the first time I did it.
