I need to root my droid 1 running 2.2.1 and only have access to a mac. I have tried running Superoneclick root but have not had any luck. I installed the mono program that the instructions say that you need if you use a mac. Can any one help me? Is there another way? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There's the Mono program, but if that's not working for you then you may need to load a Linux Live CD and try SBF flash in conjunction with the files from link 2 in my signature.

This may be a dumb question and I am only asking because I have tried to figure it out for hours. After I install mono what is the procedure to open the exe? I cant find instructions anywhere.

To be honest, I have no idea. I'm more familiar with Linux through some VERY casual use than I am with OS X.whatever they're up to now.

What does mono do? Maybe we can figure this out together.

I've tried z4root, doesn't work. The only way that you can root 2.2.1, to my knowledge, is that whole spf something something madness, or superoneclick. I used my windows xp laptop, not sure about a mac. Id suggest asking a friend who has an XP

Not possible without a computer. Period. Not with the tools at our disposal.

Do you have a CDR and bandwidth you can burn? If so, you can boot a Linux live CD and then use a program called sbf_flash to flash Motocache1's SPRecovery-only SBF, then use his update.zip to root the phone and turn off the Recovery Replacement System that Motorola gave us to protect our phones from attack.

HALP MI! I'm trying to root my OG Droid on a Mac with absolutely 0 luck. Unfortunately i'm currently stuck with 2.2.1 on a FRG83D, and Z4 doesn't work with FRG83D... SO. I've literally gotten nowhere. Am I seriously the only one that's run into this wall? I'll have to have a resolution for a Mac, because I currently dont have access to a PC. (never thought i would see that day.) I tried the Mono route also, but nada. This will take my root-genity, so you may have to explain (just a tiny bit) in depth. If anyone has a solution or any ideas, help a droider out!

I'll offer you the same option I've offered everyone. Maybe you'll take me up on it. Do you have a CD-R and some bandwidth you can burn? If so you can try a Linux live CD to use a program called SBF Flash.

Unfortunately i'm also CD-R'less at the moment as well. I did see where you mentioned that before, but it seems like it would take quite a few more steps to get the same results. I've tried just about all I can find, but nothing seems to work with a Mac. I do have an intel mac (which is why most of this is so frustrating) but i've gotten no luck. One problem I ran into earlier was an adb error? I was using Terminal to enter the lines it gave, but it returned an error instead of successfully completing. I can't recall what the actual error message was, but I just assumed it was because of 2.2.1. Any ideas?

I just installed Ubuntu on my Mac and it was super easy. Obviously you said you don't have a free cd-r right now but if you can pick one up. Go to ubuntu.com and download the right file. It has step by step instructions on how to get it installed. I would recommend downloading virtualbox, it's a free virtual machine program. I didn't want the headache of dual booting through bootcamp. Here is a good guide. There is a way to do this without actually burning a cd first but I already had it on CD so I didn't bother to try it that way. If you decide to do this and need some help, shoot me a PM and I will gladly help where I can.

Same results as what? Root? There are two ways to root a Droid on 2.2.1. One involves SuperOneClick or Soup or Root, which I've seen too many people have problems with, but both require a Windows PC. The other method involves flashing SPRecovery onto your Droid and then rooting via an update.zip file that also turns off the Recovery Replacement System. All of them involve hooking your computer to a PC. The latter method can be done under Windows or Linux. If Mono didn't work then your only other option is to use a Windows computer to flash SPRecovery onto your phone via RSD Lite or SBF_Flash via Linux.

Conversely you can borrow someone else's computer.

Scratch that. I was looking into the Ubuntu method, and it's looking a lot deeper than i'm trying to dig. I'll try to persuade a friend into letting me on their PC tomorrow. Since I have both of you here though, which way would be the easiest to root with a PC? I've seen quite a few options, but oviously i'm just looking for the easiest/safest way to get this going.
