ok--here goes noob and blond!! lol did a search but didn't find anything that seemed to answer my question....

rooted with BB and did a wipe data due to advice about lagginess when using latest sholes (may go back to launcher when site is back up) and thought I had backup'ed, however, no go....

so, anyone know how to get the paid apps back (free ones I can search for) like beautiful widgets and bettercut???

go into market. Click the menu button and downloads. It will give you a list of all your downloaded apps. You can redownload them from there or just go into your google checkout page and it will show you what you purchased.

I thought ones apps were associated to his/hers gmail account not the phone and its OS

I've always been told just login your google email account and the apps are tied to that.

the only thing tied to your account is apps you paid for (from what I have heard) and contacts.

When I rooted I accidentally wiped. All my paid apps were in my downloads in the Market.

For future reference use the Titanium Backup app from the market o backup your applications. It is a free app that only works for rooted phones. There are some advanced features in the donate version, but the free version has everything you need.

It is by far the best backup tool I have ever used for backing up applications. It even keeps everything listed in the market download page when you restore the apps. It supports batch restoring with like one click, no need to go to the market and download/install each app individually like atrackdog makes you do...
