Rooted 2.0.1, should I go to 2.1/2.2 before I install custom ROM?

I'm at 2.0.1, am rooted, and have installed motocache's sprecovery image w/o kernel.

Should I try to load the 2.1 or 2.2 update before I try to install a custom ROM (either UD 7 or CM)?

Also when installing a new ROM and Kernel, should I install the ROM or the Kernel first?

    ROM first then kernel

just stay on 2.0.1 to install roms. SPRecovery wont let you do the OTA update anyways

just have to do a wipe data/cache before switching build numbers (usually, to be on the safe side)

There is no benefit to updating to 2.2 before installing any ROM. In fact, if you do, you might get the updated bootloader that will prevent you from keeping SPRecovery, and will have to root again in a different way than you just did.

I say again, there is no benefit to updating to 2.2. Just flash the ROM, then the kernel, make backups every step of the way, and you're good to go. Flashing the ROM, along with 2-3x each system/cache data wipes will put the ROM on cleanly no matter what you're coming from.

Thanks guys. I just wanted to be clear before I loaded a new ROM.

so custom ROM's will also update the build number depending on what ROM it is?

You guys got any recommendations for kernel's to install for either UD or CM?

For Cyanogen 6 i would very highly recommend ChevyNo1's ultra low voltage kernels. Not every phone handles them well, but mine is doing great on one. If your phone gets glitchy with a ulv kernel, all you have to do is go up to low or medium voltage and thinks should function properly. If Chevy's kernels don't work out for you it seems like the major alternative is P3. Those aside, there's loads of kernels out there. Try 'em all if you've got the time and patience.

    Chevy's Froyo Kernels:

***Chevy released newer kernels in August. You can locate the link to the newer kernels a few pages into that thread.
