    OK, Gotta share.

A few weeks ago I rooted and installed a nice custom ROM that I like. Our company IT mgr is a Droid guy as is one of my co-workers at our corporate office.

While visiting with my co-worker Droid user I shoed him my FROYO equipped Droid. He said "got to have, it's so fast and it sure looks sweet".

My response was to check it out with the IT guy as he saw it on mine and really liked it as well. Maybe he will help you.

The IT guy says "no way, I'm not even thinking about that. They put people in jail for that stuff".

    Please comment :).

There is nothing to comment on, I guarantee not a single one of us will ever go to jail for rooting our phones.

Proof you can be a complete idiot and still work in IT... with that said if the phones are 'company' phones the company can discipline you according to their policies which may include termination... of course this would entail the idiots in your IT department being able to catch you doing it...

I completely understand what your IT guy was saying. A few months ago I went to a bakery and bought some cake. When I got home I decided I wanted chocolate frosting instead of the buttercream that came on it, so I put my own chocolate frosting on it. Cops busted down my door and I was off to the slammer!!

Seriously dude, if you bought it, it's YOURS! while there are some things that you can put on it that will land you in jail, a custom ROM ain't one of them. so go ahead put on a ROM, put on an old copy of Windows ME whatever makes you feel good.

Phone modding is not illegal, it's one of the few things that is considered 'open season' for hacking.

Void the warranty? Yes, if they catch you. Chance of that happening = slim to none. Returnable to original condition? Easily. Illegal? roflmao :rofl3:

It isn't, and they can't "catch you" when there's nothing to catch.

None to none. Rooting your phone doesn't void the warranty. The warranty is on the hardware, not the software. Read the VZW agreement.

    Quite right :)

So... if you root your Droid and get caught and put in jail, can an iPhone user jailbreak you out?

Umm... rooting your phone voids your warranty.
Overclocking can cause your phone to overheat, which
    can be used against you.

#1. Overheating (to the point of damage) is extremely rare. Less rare than unicorns, but more rare than how I prefer steak.
#2. Malfunctioning Droids (or Droid chargers) are perfectly capable of overheating themselves, no assistance from overclocking necessary.
#3. If you needed to use your warranty, as I did once a couple months ago, it's pretty standard procedure to simply unroot the phone before showing it to them...
#4. You're probably both right. I don't think the warranty explicitly states that rooting voids it, but they could probably use it as a basis to blame you for the problem. But that would require 1) you being silly enough to bring it in rooted, and 2) them actually using your phone long enough to find out. And they usually don't even look.
