These articles are very good to read. The app that you want to download from the market is z4root. It is, in my opinion, the best way to root. 1 click. Worked flawlessly. Then pickup with Clockwork or something similar.

Rooting last Monday was the best decision of my life (dont tell my wife I said that). Its a whole new phone.

I now have android 2.2.1 went on the market for Z4root an it was not there so I went to *********** and got the 1.3.0 version of Z4root. Neither the temporary or the permanent root works. I also tried Easy Root but they want money for the apprentice an its not even in the market I don't trust that. How can I root my phone another way or how do I get it to work with Z4root? :)

Use link 3 in hartman's post it will root for ya. A little more work but it will always work. The Ota patched a hole that Eastroot and Z4 root, ect used to gain superuser access

2.2.1 on the Droid cannot be rooted by any one-click method currently written. That method is the best available option for a variety of reasons.
