I used to use gv. Not hard. You have to dial special numbers on your phone to setup forwarding to the Google voice number because vzw doesn't directly support it, but it's not hard.

I was using the free basic vzw visual voicemail on my Note 4, cause I could play my messages on the phone without calling & that was close enough.

Maybe I'll go back to using gv.

I've had vzw voicemail from the beginning, the app they had for the galaxy nexus was even better than the bloat app, but everything I've read says it doesn't work on the 6p.

I've read some conflicting reviews on the gv app, but it ought to be worth a try

I've had gv since it came out. Love it. And it's free.

I never had any luck with Google voice when I used it years ago. I've always used Verizon basic voice mail. But the one I liked the most is Project Fi because of it's visual voice mail. Out the box & baked in, it always worked.

So, I forgot that hangouts took over gv too. Just set mine back up & had the wife give me a test call. Gv app notified me, then I thought she'd texted me, but it was the transcription in hangouts. Might have to just uninstall gv again...

Wow - GV - Hangouts - how many apps can Google have for with the same features ?

I did like the Fi Voice Mail app. - Wonder if GV has the same functionality, the transcription was cool if not completely accurate.

On another note, got a new cable modem and Netgear router and it screams! Think we'll see the service tech sign up here. We were comparing phones and speedtest results I was bagging on him about the speedtest ads.

He has a note 3 and I showed him the 6P, might have another convert....

You get transcription in hangouts & can play right there. They're trying to do away with gv as a separate service, but they don't seem to know where to put it's features.

The gv app hasn't changed much & likely won't, moving forward. In the gv app, it flat out tells you that SMS for your gv number is handled in hangouts.

So, sign up for gv, then use hangouts for voicemail?

Yup.
Basically, what you'll do is forward all of your calls through gv.

To do so, you have to dial each of the following.

If you are having trouble configuring Google voicemail on Verizon, you can make the switch manually by dialing these three activation codes:

*71[Your Google Voice number]
*90[Your Google Voice number]
*92[Your Google Voice number]

Each of those are for different situations, no answer, busy, etc.

You should then automatically get voicemails in hangouts, which will look something like this:

No problem. To turn off the forwarding, I THINK you just call those numbers again, but I forget. I thought the article that I got them from said how, but it doesn't anymore if it did.
