I took the following steps

Root with z4
Install Droid bootstrapper
Install rom manager
RM can install clockwork mod, make backups and install roms
I tried rubix because RM had it as an option
I then manually installed liberty and settled on it because it seems fast, effient and has lots of built in tweaks.

I personally would not recommend rooting and modding unless you are technical or are willing to read a lot. If you are pretty satisfied with your phone then it's probably not worth it. It's really more of a hobby.
