I'm like 99% sure wifi will work whether the phone is activated with Verizon or not. So I don't know if the rom matters so much. Of course ONLY wifi will work.

Yea the device will work as usual on wifi u'll be able to use pretty much all of it but making phone calls and messaging but apps internet etc should all work fine on wifi as long as the apps don't use the phone etc and I don't think I should recomend a rom for ur d1 I'm a bit biased I think ha

On the black screen when it first starts up that says tap here to activate... tap the following upper left corner, upper right corner, lower rights corner and lastly lower left corner of the screen. It will then go to the regular home screen.

You won't need to bypass anything. Once your tbolt is activated your d1 won't be. Simple as that. I'm personally keeping my d1 in my car delegating it to media player duties and using my tbolt for everything else. If I ever need data on my d1 I can always just tether it to my tbolt.
