I thought I read/watched a review where the X came with rich text editing options. I can't seem to find this when I compose messages in the GMAIL app. Is this exclusive to a different app? Do I have to download an additional app for this? Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I found it in the EMAIL app. Once again I answer my own question minutes after posting.

Is there any way to have these edit options with the GMAIL app? If not, is there a way to show the number of unread messages for the stock app while it is in the dock? I'd like to have both, but if I had to choose one, I'd probably go with the GMAIL app and sacrifice the rich text options. If I needed them, I could compose from the stock app.

You could use a non-stock browser like dolphin hd, dolphin, or xscope. Set user agent to computer/desktop and access the gmail.com web site just like on a computer.
