Changelog (6-8-2012):
LET THIS VERSION SIT FOR A WHILE SO THE OVERCLOCK HAS TIME TO SINK IN!
5.6
* Overclocked to 1.2GHz (credit to sparkyman)
* Working init.d now (fully)

Flashing instructions:

FLASH 5.6.890 SBF (for a TOTALLY clean install for those with paranoia) ONLY IF NOT COMING FROM 906 or later OTA, or you could BRICK!
1: Download the 5.6.890 SBF file HERE
2: Download RSDLite 5.5 HERE
3: Extract the contents of the SBF file to a folder on your computer
4: Install RSDLite onto your Windows computer
5: Boot the Droid 3 into bootloader by holding both Vol+ & Vol- at the same time when powering the phone on
6: Select "AP Fastboot" and press Vol+ to select it
7: Select the XML from the extracted SBF file in RSDLite
8: Connect the phone, and when it says "Connected", hit "Start"
9: Wait for the phone to finish flashing, and booting (it will reboot a couple times, leave it alone, its supposed to!)

ROOT STOCK ROM
10: Install and run Petes Motorola Root Tools. Download it HERE
11: Follow the instructions in the app to root your phone

INSTALL SAFESTRAP RECOVERY
12: Once rooted, install one of the following recoveries:
OFFICIAL BY HASHCODE: HERE
UNOFFICIAL BY RICK#2: HERE

13: Reboot your phone, and when prompted, hit MENU to enter SafeStrap Recovery.

BACKUP AND INSTALL NEW ROM
14: MAKE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE DOING ANYTHING! (just a precaution)
15: Go to "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from internal sdcard", then select my ROM's zip file
16: After it installs, back out and reboot the phone
17: YOU HAVE DONE IT! CONGRATS ON YOU NEW STEEL DROID INSTALL!

I would suggest using the 1.08e release of Rick#2's tweaked Safestrap. It has a lot of safeguards built in that could really save you a bunch of time in flashing and/or testing, and I personally like his menu layout and design. But of course, you still have all the functionality of Hashcodes Safestrap still in place. I am aware that 1.08f is available from Rick#2, but it breaks SDCard mounting, so just stick to 1.08e.

Give the ROM time to boot. The first boot took me almost 5 minutes! If your phone doesn't boot in 15 minutes, pull the battery, wipe cache and try again. If it still doesn't boot, you need to go back and start over with my instructions at the beginning!

ALSO: Please be sure to check out the free tethering hack! I use it regularly, and it DOES work. Quite well I might add. Details HERE

Credits:
Here are my thanks for this build, in no particular order:

AOKP (for their awesome ICS source!)
Rick#2 (tweaked 1.08f Safestrap)
Google! (Kickass Android OS!)
Motorola! (kickass phone!)
JRummy (init.d support)
cvalenti15 (testing)
and a few more...

ROM INSTALLATION QUESTIONS:
(1) Is this a KEXEC or NON-KEXEC ROM?
(2) Using SafeStrap v3.05, which ROM Slot is recommended for installation?

Thanks, Bruce Senator

ROM INSTALLATION QUESTIONS:
(1) Is this a KEXEC or NON-KEXEC ROM?
(2) Using SafeStrap v3.05, which ROM Slot is recommended for installation?

Thanks, Bruce Senator

so i've had this phone for 4weeks now, it is running on Page Plus cellular paying $28.79 so i can't complain about it much, i've learned allot about this phone in a short amount of time here is some of what i do n dont know-
1)i don't know for sure if this is a kexec rom
2) How i have Safestrap recovery setup is Steel droid is in slot 1, Minimoto rom is in slot 2. This would be how id highly recommend anyone using the device set it up.
There both great roms and that said minimoto being a gb based rom it is considerably more stable and neither rom has motoblur(i hate motoblur so much)

3)and if your anything like me you'll want a fail safe plan b of sorts just in case u brick ur phone and can only boot into fastboot.
this thing has saved me from the fire so many times so bookmark this address
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255198&page=23

4)say you found the rom u like but no downlink works
try these sites
https://www.mediafire.com/folder/b0gq735hrqxx6/Droid_3_ROMS
http://droid3roms.webs.com/

5)i would also download any roms/files/anything for this phone
that you might want down the road n re upload to google drive or something for safe keeping cause alot of these threads are all but closed and when they close its gone

I just followed all the steps in the first post and everything was successful, however after a reboot I am still running stock 2.3.4. Not quite sure why the flash doesn't appear to have worked, even though safestrap said it did complete successfully.
Anyone else get this behavior and find a workaround/fix?

you created a rom slot?
installed zip on rom slot and not stock slot?
verified md5 checksum for rom after downloading?

@themib thanks for responding, really appreciate it.

To answer your last post, when the device boots SafeStrap does come up and it says "Safe System: Disabled"

I think that was the clue I needed to get the ROM installed properly. I wasn't too familiar with SafeStrap but after you asked that question I did a little research into what all that means and I think I got it working now; at least Steel Droid looks like it is trying to boot. Not sure if it's stuck, I guess booting back into SafeStrap and clearing cache might be necessary. I'll post again if I can get it to boot or not.

Awesome, thanks for the links. This guide says to use Rick's tweaked 1.08e version of SafeStrap, and I have read through all 36 pages of posts to see if that was superseded. I'm going to try the whole process over using safestrap 3.05, because it looks like SteelDroid is not going to boot for me.

Don't get your hopes up, but I MIGHT try to work on an updated version for the D3. My life is jam packed right now, but I'll see what I can do.

There has not been an updated d3 rom in a long time,
I still use my d3, wifi only to check email and tapatalk...
Still running 5.6
