I have had the original Motorola Droid since November of 2009. I have never Rooted my phone but want to give it a try. However, there are SO MANY different ROMS out there....

Can someone please give me some guidance on which ROM is best for the D1 and how I would go about rooting my Droid?

    Thanks

Do you have any experience with either one, mainly on a D1?

I rooted, tried a couple roms, then found Ultimate Droid. Awesome customization and runs smooth as butter on my D1. I recommend giving UD a try.

    Play a jam!

How do I even start rooting? Where are the walkthroughs for UD?

Oh wow. You have opened a whole case of worms. Search the D1 forums around here to find out how to root. I won't go through it all right now because lots of people have already posted how to do it.

After you are rooted, go to the Ultimate Droid forum in the hacks and custom roms section, and download the rom from a sticky. I would go with 2.5 right now until 3.0 comes out.

    Play a jam!

I would go with the new Liquid Gingerbread 1.2 that came out today. It's awesome.

When I first started the root and rom game I went to theunlockr.com and it took me through every step I needed, and had every download there for each step. Really helped me a lot.

Wow, I just read through a walkthrough on how root the D1 and it seemed SO complicated...I don't want to jack up my phone too bad and render it useless...I may just have to settle with stock. :(

I felt the same way. But once you get rooted its all very easy, and it doesn't just breath new life into your phone, its more like a full on resurrection from the dead.

Superoneclick generally seems to work well.

I would highly recommend Liquid LGB 1.2....my wife absolutely loves it....and I must admit I am a tad jealous as my D2 can't run it.

I hesitated at first due to the same reason. Once you get through it you'll wonder why.

As far as the ROM, it comes down to personal preference. I've tried most of them and settled into Project Elite 4.2. It's fast, stable, and themers have been flocking to it.

I would agree with Wally Project Elite 4.2 theme crazy right now. As for rooting it sounds tough but its worth it. Just follow the steps and you should be good.
