Ok, so I've been reading about rooting and people are talking about how rooting your phone is the ****, but I have really only seen 1 or 2 advantages. Please fill in the gaps so I can convince myself to do it.

1: You can overclock or underclock your phone (which I would necessarily do because of battery life)
2: You can install new roms, like ports of 2.1 (which I would be hesitant to do because of buggyness)

I already have 5 homescreens and other things, and I really dont care about some super sweet animated wallpapers </sarcasm>

Is there anything else I should know about before I decide not to root my phone and wait for 2.1?

    3) Wifi tethering without paying for an app, like PDANet
    4) Removing VMM stub, corporate calendar, the redundant e-mail app (if all you use is Gmail), the Amazon MP3 thingy
    5) Theming with MetaMorph

Roms includes so many things, MT browser, widgets from other phones, wireless tether, etc... The coolest thing is the ability to change the things you want. My friend was anti rooting, got him to do it, and now he acts like it's a brand new phone. Just try it out, you can always go back to stock and wait for the things we already have.

The biggest thing about rooting for me is it is lots of fun trying out new themes and Roms and checking all the forums every hour to see if anything new is out

Is there any great advantage to rooting? No, not really... but its ****in fun! and you get to have a phone that is built more to your liking

You have to reset everything and start over, right?

Used DM as well, no need to wipe data and start over. Themed w/MM Adamz Skmoked Glass.

the multi-touch browser honestly doesn't entice me, and I can't think of any other widgets that would really benefit me enough to do this.. I mean, are the enhancements of rooting really that important? the only application I want to remove is the amazon mp3 one, so I just don't see a point. However, I do want to try overclocking (my droid always runs super smooth after I reset it... for about 2 hours) to keep the phone zipping around but I'm afraid of the temprature/battery implications. I don't mean to be a nuisance, but can someone give a tangible example of a benefit of rooting?

I'd very much appreciate it

Rooting is like hookin up your ride. It'll get you there whether you got 22"s or 16"s, It just looks cooler with the 22"s.

I rooted mine 2 days after I got it and I wouldn't go back. You can't really tell whether or not you're going to like having it rooted or not til you give it a shot. Like it was said above if you don't like it then you can always go back to stock. And if you think your phone is running zippy now then wait til you overclock it.

it sounds to me like you've already convinced yourself not root, so no matter what everyone here says it won't sway your decision.
