Flashing that sbf changes nothing but your recovery

Flashing SPRecovery should have an impact on the phone at all. Either way, your contacts should be synced with the cloud, so it really doesnt matter.

And your contacts are stored on the google cloud, so they will always come back when you sign in to your Gmail

Then something else was jacked. Rooting alone changes nothing on your phone other than adding SU capabilities.

If you are running Vista or Win7 you have to rename it to "update"(without the quotes) not "update.zip". Otherwise it will be "Update.zip.zip"
