question about stock recovery

Hello! I'm relatively new to the Android OS and was looking to upgrade from the leaked 5.5.893 to 5.9.901. I'm not rooted, but not sure that matters for this. Read that I needed to do this via stock recovery, and had a question about that:

Does the stock recovery process erase my settings, installed apps, & other personal data that was previously on my phone? If it does, what's the best way to back them up and restore afterwards?

figured it out!

Found another thread on different forum where the person mentioned he had no issues retaining his data/apps/settings post stock recovery.

Took the plunge and I can confirm that's the case

Looking forward to the improvements that 5.9.901 bring.
