Question about pricing with contract

I noticed that on Verizon's website, the Droid 3 is $199 with a contract, but on Motorola's site it's only $59. My question is either why is it more expensive on Verizon, or where does Motorola screw you? This is my first time buying a cell phone myself so any insight will be greatly appreciated.
