First off, I am very new to the Droid, but very experienced with computers. I am attempting to Root my phone using Matth3w's method at this link: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/ha...-phone-2-1-rom-o-c-mm-boot-animation-etc.html
I have followed the instructions exactly. I checked the file to make sure it is update.zip, not update.zip.zip. After step #6, the menu comes up and I selected "apply sdcard:update.zip". Near the middle of the screen, this is listed in yellow: "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command". When I select "apply sdcard:update.zip", here is what comes up on the screen:

    -- Install from sdcard...
    Finding update package...
    Opening update package...
    Verifying update package...
E:EOCD marker occurs after start of EOCD
    E:signature verification failed
    Installation aborted.

    Any help appreciated,
    Richard

Seems to be a corrupted update.zip. Try downloading the droidmod updater from here :http://downloads.droidmod.org/dmupdater-11.apk This roots your phone for you.

Put that on your SD card and install it with a file manager (Astro,Estrongs etc). You can also type that link directly on your phone's browser and install it that way.

You don't have to flash back to 2.0.1. You can just flash SPRecovery with RSD Lite, put the ROM on your SDcard, rename to update.zip, boot into recovery, install the update.zip and you will obtain root.

Oh yeah, you're probably on 2.1 already. Explains why the update.zip failed since they patched the exploit. Follow this to root instead : 2.1 SP Recovery SBF - DroidMod

    Thanks to everyone!

I went back to 2.01 and rooting was easy. Now I'm trying to decide which ROM to go with.

    Thanks again,
    Richard
