I have followed all the steps
    1.Download super user
    2.Rename update.zip
3.Copy to root of sdcard (either by inserting micro sd card or through usb)
    4.Unmount sdcard
    5.Turn off
6.Put into reboot mode (Power + X, when exclmation mark in triangle pops up, hold volume up and camera button)
7.using Dpad, select and click update.zip
-this is where my problem lies-at bottom of screen it says E:Can't open /chache/recovery/command, when I click "apply sdcard:update.zip" it says
    E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

    -- Install from sdcard...
    Finding update package...
    Opening update package...
    Verifying update package...
E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (no such fil
    e or directory)
    E:signature verification failed
    Installation aborted.

2.1 the official ota update can not be rooted. But you can install a rooted version of the 2.1 ota so you still have the official 2.1 plus root.

were you at 2.01 before trying. That file was to take an unrooted (factory) 2.01 droid to rooted 2.1 ota. Just want to make sure we are on the same page here.

You CANT root official 2.1. You have to use the SBF to downgrade to 2.0.1 and then you root and THEN you can upgrade to 2.1. Its failing the signature verification because its not 2.0.1. Check out the link the other person posted about 2.1 root....

Do a search of the forum for "RSD Lite". Find the sbf file used by Verizon and use RSD Lite ot reflash back to 2.0.1. Then use any of the 5 or so methods to install the SPRecovery which replaces the stock recovery (the concole you get into by power up while holding the X key). Once you have SPRecovery you can download any of the rom flashes and rename them to update.zip and use SPRecovery to install them.

Slow down and read the instructions two, three of four times before going through the steps. And when you go through the steps...read the step before performing...read it slowly. You'd be surprised what your brain will insert that is not there. I've doen it too. I can almost guarantee toi you, if it is not working it is because you did not follow the steps in the instructions. Unless you have that one famous droid that exists that behaves differently then everyone elses. LOL

I just need to know how to downgrade back to 2.0.1 without having to lose all my files and having to reactivate it.

Just wondering its kind of off topic but will there ever be a root for the official ota 2.1 or will we always have to revert back to 2.0.1 and root from there

Please, somebody help me, I flashed my phone to get rid of the 2.1, I tried to install the update.zip which was 2.1 with root, it still says its a directory! And my biggest problem is that I lost ALL my files, and for some reason when I use my computer to copy them on there, it says they are already there. And they don't show up on my phone. They are hidden somewhere on the sdcard.

To start with, follow this guide:

    http://www.droidforums.net/forum/hacking-help/24707-unroot-unbrick-your-phone-using-sbf.html

The only thing this guide doesn't mention is what to do when RSDLite comes back and says "Failed...". When it does this, you'll notice all the info in the left side window of RSDLite just disappears, meanwhile your phone still shows "In Progress...". You simply hit the "Show Device" button on RSDLite and that will reboot your phone. Even though it says "Failed...", it actually worked and many forum members have reported the exact same behaviour, myself included. So do not worry about this 'error'.

After you've followed that guide, your phone will now be back to the stock un-rooted version of 2.0.1 - just like what you walked out of the Verizon store with.

Next up, you're going to follow this guide:

How to Root Your Motorola Droid Running 2.1

...except you'll start on Step 2 because Step 1 is what you just did above. Do NOT assume you've downloaded the correct files previously, just start fresh and do it again with the links in that article.

I have performed this myself and it went off without a hitch, except that error that I've already mentioned isn't exactly an error with RSDLite.
