As soon as I saw the word "Pica" I immediately thought of high school typing class.

LOL, me too, although for me it was junior high.

I don't get some of the suggested words either. If I type something correctly and then hit the space bar, I don't know why it replaces it with something else.

One of my old phones used to change "woohoo" to "zonino"...

Ha, my Nokia 6300 did that.

Here's a better way to remedy this, rather than adding words individually to the dictionary
Whenever you type a word that the dictionary wants to auto-correct, just tap-and-hold what you typed (it's at the left end of the suggestion bar) and it will add it to the dictionary for later use

Thank you, didn't know that. :)

I don't quite get why it would replace app with apparently. I would think someone would have added app into the dictionary by now...its funny how frequently you'll see a comment in the market saying something like: "this is a great apparently!"

It there a way to just turn off predictive text?

Menu >> Settings >> Language & Keyboard >> Android Keyboard >> Word Suggestion Settings. Then just uncheck what you don't want to use.

You can also go to "Device Keyboard" and uncheck the ones you don't want as well.
