What is the difference between the Galaxy nexus GSM/HSPA+ and the vzw in terms of why these accessories wouldn't work?

Dimensions. The GSM/HSPA+ version is slightly less thick. So many times accessories will be sloppy fits. If you do further research like looking in the reviews of the products you may find someone who tried it with their version stating whether or not it worked. Best of Luck.
