playing video files

i transfered some of my videos from my digital camera onto my droid so i can show people and i can't seem to get them to play i tried downloading this video player and the only 2 videos that came up were ones i recorded myself from my droid. Do i need to convert my video files before transfering them to my phone if so whats a good converter to download? or is there just a simple app i can get for my phone to play them perferably a free app?
