The best rooting effort appears to be taking place here:

All Droid - View topic - Possible Droid Exploit for Root

    Hopefully soon.

Yep it should be in the phone already, Google disabled it in fear of a lawsuit from Apple in the states. If it isn't in we have a dump of the GSM droid (milestone). Shouldn't be too hard to move the browser components over in the worst case scenario.

    Great news!

Although this is still a REQUIREMENT that Google needs to implement in an update. There is no reason Eris should have it, and we don't.

Since I am new to Android, isn't it entirely possible someone basically just repackages the browser and maybe maps to support it?

Or are the browser and map apps not part of the source?

PhoneMyPC has supported multi-touch zooming since Android 1.0 (on un-rooted phones).

My [subjective, un-supportable] hunch about Multi-touch is this.

Google is walking a wide path around this because of Apple. It could be patent issues, or it could be because Eric Schmidt sat on Apple's board during the rise of the iPhone.

The best evidence of this is the following:
    * Google would not implement Multi-touch, even though all Android hardware and all versions of Android would support some version of it.
    * Even though it's built into their OS now, they won't make their software use it in the USA, but they plan to do so in Europe.
    * The current Multi-touch code in Android 2.0 is almost certainly contributed by HTC and not Google.

I think Google is 'allowing' it to come to Android, but keeping their hands out of it, for whatever reason.

Consequently, we looked into making a MT browser a while back. It's quite doable, but a lot of work to get the other functionality up to a reasonable level.

I agree with RosarioM... It's NOT that big of a deal. Regardless of which method is better, we're talking about zooming here. I really don't think any of our lives will drastically improve when "pinch to zoom" is a browser feature on the droid. Someone even went so far as to call it a "selling point" on the iPhone. six and one half dozen people.

    multi touch

Any one try xscope? It claims to be a browser that supports multi touch (pinch zoom) functions, however it is $2.99. Curious if it really works.

    Just tried it, works.

But it's a really sluggish browser, and the way pinch and zoom is in it is a bit sluggish too in my books too, zooms out way too far out. It zooms too much and it doesn't fix that until you go to move.

Don't think it's worth the $3, seems like a beta really.
