For those frustrated because your phone call ear audio suddenly starts causing problems and working only with speakerphone, I was having the same difficulty. Had to use a headset to listen to media files and put phone calls on speaker for phone audio. I found an app that will let me control the sound for my phone. It is called "Soundabout." Available on play store and free. I used the settings to set call audio for earpiece and media audio for speaker. There are multiple options for wired devices, bluetooth, etc., but this is what works for me. I believe your phone will still recognize if you have a headset or buds plugged in and play through them. This was just the easiest fix in the world for my old Note 2 that I am waiting to upgrade for the Note 4. I spent a couple of weeks frustrated with the phone not having the sound the way I wanted it before I found this app and set the audio settings. Hope this helps someone!!
