I have friend that has a Droid and his phone button has multiplied and now he has several.
Can he get rid of them and how does this happen?

First try turning the Droid on and off. It that doesn't work do a 30 second battery pull while the device is on. If that fails do a factory data reset out of the privacy section. All of his apps will be in the downloads folder of the market when he signs back in.

If that fails, you're going to have to tell your friend to return his Droid for another one.

Is this within the phone app itself or are there multiple phone icons (shortcuts) on the desktop? Those you just longpress on and drag to the trashcan at the bottom of the screen. (It isn't a trashcan until you do this, its the app drawer handle usually)

Press, hold, drag to the trashcan

if he deletes too many, pull up application list, and long press the phone icon

Very cool thanks guys....what is he doing to make this happen?

It's a corporate phone used for work only it replaced a Samsung POS and he's only had it for 2 weeks and loves it.

I just got mine Saturday from a 53 year old it's the complete shizzle.
There isn't hardly anything I cant do....it will suffice for my netbook for the time being.
