Ok, I apologize if this is answered elsewhere, but have yet to find it. I did this today ("stock" 2.1 with root access). I installed SetCPU and quickly learned that I need to install an overclock kernel for me to actually push it above 550. How do I go about doing that without a custom ROM? That's where I'm stuck... thanks in advance, won't be able to check back here until later tonight.

Download any of AdamZs or ChevyNo1 or other Overclock kernel.
Put the update.zip in your /sdcard
    Reboot into recovery console
    Allow update.zip
    Install update.zip
    Reboot

Should take a total of about 3 minutes to figure out the instructins, and less than a minute to do it. There are MANY threads on how to do it, and MANY threads about "How do I install an overclocking kernel."

Adamz has a FTP folder where you can download his kernel. Index of /roms/motorola/droid/adamz/glass_boots

Download the ESE53 boot rom. Make sure the file name says smoked.glass.BOOT.ese53.rom.tgz. Download thgat to your PC. Place the file on the root of your SD card. Boot into SPRecovery. Assuming you are using version 3b...if not, update that first. Boot into SPRecovery by holding the X key while powering up the phone. Once into SPRecovery select install, chose rom from SD Card and chose the file mentioned above.

When it starts the install it will attempt a nandroid backup. Once that is complete it will ask which power level you want, Low VCotage or medium of high or something like that. Chose one (I chose low vaoltage) then it will ask which level of speed you want (I chose 250 to 800 mhz). It will flash it and then ask you to enjoy yourself. Hit the power button a couple times to get back to original SPRecovery menu and chose reboot phone. Have a ball.
