Is it possible to set the cpu to a higher rate than 800 while running BB? I've tried a couple free apps but they don't do anything.

try changing the kernal until you find one that works with your droid
ex: good battery life, and low temperature

PS: REMEMBER to do a nandroid backup before changing the kernal!!
also try using the ULV or LV kernals first, these try to get the best of both worlds by utilizing less voltage (better battery life) and increased speed, if your droid boot loops or acts up try a higher voltage with less speed.

    a few kernels I recommend
    Slayher Kernels
    ChevyNo1 Kernels
    P3Droid Kernels
I personally recommend trying the Slayher v1.6 kernel and setting up compcache you will achieve a very smooth experience with compcache activated.

Yes it is possible. Research some kernels and see what works well for others on BB. I was at 1ghz when I was running BB, went to 800 for cyanogen and UD to sconserve battery. SetCpu among other apps can handle overclocking/underclocking duties (4shared.com).
