Well you will likely hear about it here first but when I received my first update, the one to 2.2.2, which came naturally as I wasn't rooted or running a rom, I woke up one morning and my phone politely let me know that there was an update available and asked if I would like to continue. That's probably how it will go down for you.

You'll get an OTA push but there will be custom ROMs available with Gingerbread probably weeks if not months before Motorola gets what they want out of it.

And those ROMs will be better.

Settings> About phone. You'll see an android version somewhere in there, and another number that looks like 2.3.20 or something like that.

ROM'd means you have a custom ROM on your phone instead of the stock OS.

It's all Android. The factory OS is the stock Motorola-Blur ROM. And every ROM can do more than the stock ROM.

Though I haven't figured out how much more you'd really want a cellphone to do ;)
