Yes you have to root to do it and depending on who you ask it does matter. I overclock to 1.2 ghz and notice it being a little snappier.

Oh ok. Well google assigns names to their os versions based alphabetically in the form of desserts. So after what I assume were alpha and beta there was...

Cupcake
Donut
Eclair
And now froyo, which is indeed what the droid 2 has

The upcoming os update will be known as gingerbread and the one after that which will mostly be for tablets IIRC will be known as honeycomb. That's as far as is confirmed though I suspect ice cream will follow
