Options for deactivated phones

My wife and I have been letting our kids use our old Droids to play games. Recently we rooted our Bionics and started freezing apps and I started to wonder if we should root our OG Droids and do the same thing to give them a bit more oomph. Before I did that I figured I should ask if there are any ROMs or O/S versions to flash that might also boost the power of the phone. Doesn't need to be able to call. Network would be nice. GPS not necessary.
