I think I recall that it means the battery is not communicating with the phone. You can check this by going to settings and checking your battery status. If it doesn't have a status (charging, discharging, etc.) then I'm correct. You could try to remove the battery and clean the contacts with a pencil eraser. If that doesn't work I would think you are going to need a replacement battery.

Same problem here...it will randomly fix itself then reappear ..I cleaned the battery, but that still didn't seem to work.

I have this problem as well. Happens about once a day even after taking the battery out and cleaning it.

Called HTC and they had no explanation for why this might happen. They just advised to call their warranty/repair number.
