There are a few apps in the Play Store that you can configure this way. I used NoLed for years and was very pleased with it. You can set it up to notify you with different colored dots for your different notifications, or set it up to flash a Gmail, SMS, etc icon for a set period of time. It works great and isn't a huge drain on your battery.
