Kind of desperate at the moment

phone functions but I cant get in to recovery mode and the phone is not rooted as far as sm update tells me

i hold down x and get the exclamation point/phone icon but when i hold down the cameera and volume button nothing happens.
I have rooted several times so I know hot to press the buttons to get in to recovery.

from what I have read I somehow deleted important files off the phone
additionally in all my wisdom my sd is wiped clean so I have no backup. although I may be able to recover it.

    my questions are this

    1. can I somehow manually root my droid outside of recovery mode.

    and

    2. if i can manually root my droid can I than use sprecovery to get back some form of recovery files

thanks for the help anyone and if there are links somewhere I would gladly follow them
I just have been looking for a while and cant seem to find a tutorial for something like this
every guide has a step to get in to recovery mode and since Icant do that I am kind of lost.

but at least my phone works it could be worse

I agree with your assessment, but how do we know that's what he was using?

    To the OP:

You need to be able to get into recovery mode, whether it be via the SM Updater or manually getting in there, unless there is some other way to do it that I am not aware of. I can't imagine what you wiped that it doesn't boot into recovery.

I suppose you could try the SM Updater app from the market and see if that works, if you haven't already.

I want to be able to get back in to my recovery mode
SM update starts the process but when I hold down the camera and volume button nothing happens.
I am pretty sure I somehow wiped out the files required t go into recovery mode
and as far as i can tell my phone is not rooted.

I did a data recovery on my sd and found some folders that might have my backup on it.

    preinstall-BDS-20100207-0248
    preinstall-BDS-20100210-0229
    preinstall-BDS-20100212-0012

all three folders are 177mb, 191mn and 192 mb

with the following files in each folder being the same
    boot, data, nandroid, system

It looks like resued my backups from the few times i
    rooted and flashed different roms.

but the bottom line is I cant get in to recovery mode to do any type of restore of the recovery files.

is there any way through the ADB program I can manually restore the above nandroid backup to my phone instead of the traditional hold down x, wait and hit sound and camera method?

    thanks

to start sprecovery you reboot the phone while holding the X and the volume up button.

You mentioned the camera and volume button so that might be why it's not working.

I have a feeling you have left out some info though as you somehow deleted your backup files.

anyway if you have those now... install sprecovery and put the files back on the card and do the above to start the recovery/restore process.

I will try and make this as clear as possible

    My phone is not rooted

I can not get in to recovery mode I hold down x at power up
and when the icon with the exclamation point comes up I hold down the camera button and correct volume button
    nothing happens.
So i have no access to my recovery mode.

I want to restore my recovery mode AND/OR nandroid backup that i recovered from my SD using ADB or some alternative method

You need to install sprecovery, if you used sholes updater then it was installed then... but somehow you have removed or corrupted it.

    Step one; install sprecovery

Step two: run sprecovery to restore your backup.

Are you pressing the camera and volume up in the right order? I have noticed that if I hit one just an instant before the other, it doesn't work. But if I hit the other one first it will work.

I can't remember whether it is the volume or camera that comes first, but you can just try both.

I realize this is unlikely to help, as you said you know how to do it, but it is still worth mentioning.

If it boots into the phone, why not just use the SM Updater mod again and it should put you into recovery mode.

You did a bang up job of jacking up your phone if you really can't get into recovery. I for one would like to see a video of you pressing the correct buttons so we know you aren't messing that up too.

SMupdater will first try to root the phone before flashing recovery. If root isn't there, it will download the update.zip to the sdcard and instruct how to use the stock recovery to apply the update. If he can't get root, SM Updater will not flash his recovery.

I don't feel it is necessary to post a video.
I have rooted my phone several times and have 3 different nandroid backups to prove it. so obviously I can press the buttons correctly.

I guess the real question is this.

CAN YOU ROOT YOUR PHONE WITHOUT THE RECOVERY MODE ON YOUR PHONE? YES OR NO? maybe through adb or some other pc application or brute force method

If you can where can i find the instructions for this

No, I don't think you can, as I said before.

And no offense, but you are the only poster I have ever seen that has managed to screw up being able to get into recovery mode by accidentally deleting the necessary files or whatever you did...so whatever experience you are touting is all for naught because despite all that experience you have somehow managed to jack up your phone.

I'm not trying to be mean here, just stating the obvious.

What I would be concentrating on is NOT rooting, but trying to get back to stock first....I know you are trying to restore a backup but I would say try to get the files that you deleted or whatever you did back on the SD card and then attempt to get them over to your system folder or whatever. The number one rule of modifying ANYTHING is "fix the current problems before continuing to modify".

I haven't used Astro in a long time, but is it possible to move some system files from an SD card to wherever they got deleted from on the internal memory?
