No MSD card usage when phone is USB connected?

So, went to show my friends some pics and there were none available. [My phone was plugged in via the USB cord so I could charge it at work.] I shut off my phone removed the battery and pulled the MSD card and reinserted it. Still nothing. To make a long story short, when I unplugged the phone it said preparing SD card and everythign came up.

You can't use it when its plugged in???

You can't use it when its plugged in???

You can't use it on the device when it's plugged in and used as a Mass storage device. You can see it on your PC just as any flash drive.

If you want to access it on the device when plugged in, change from mass storage to charge only.
