The majority of my custom ringtones are MP3s, but a handful of them are AACs. Every single one of them worked fine on 2.1, but on 2.2, the AAC files are completely dead. I didn't even notice this issue until someone whom I assigned an AAC ringtone to called me, and all the phone did was vibrate. Astro and the music player don't recognize the files anymore either.

What's up with Froyo and media? I've posted before about certain videos not working, now AACs are dead too? Not cool. All I found by searching were threads about streaming audio quality; this issue may or may not be related. Anybody have any insight?

I'm not sure that this is anything meaningful that addresses your concerns but I stream my local Talk Radio Station via CherryRplayer which is ACC and it's working fine. My 2.2 pushed through this morning and I'm streaming audio right now. Granted, it's not saved audio but still.
