Yes you need to reformat in the Droid and when you boot into recovery there is an option.... I can't remember the name of it. I will boot into recovery and find out and post it for you.

ok... i tried to install without renaming and after formatting the card and it still says (no such file or directory)

how do i manually find the file ?

When in recovery go to install zip from SD card and when your in there its like select or something..... and then scroll through and select the file. Also you might need to install a custom rom. Do you know if your using clockwork mod?

ok im in recovery right now.. i got the puke green droid in the background. I have 3 options:

choose rom from sd card
allow update.zip installation
Install / sdcard/update.zip (deprecated)

when i select the rom from sd card it says:

E: no tar archives found

when i select allow update.zip install it just blinks

when i select Install /sdcard/update.zip

i get the (no such file or directory )

Im not sure what mod is on the phone...

Ok I'm guessing you need a new rom so we can see if the wifi will work....... I use ultimate Droid 1 but I've used bugless beast before and its good. Also I'm not sure why it wont let you up date. It might be that the person you got it from is running a very strict rom or they don't have clockwork mod or any number of problems or things they could have done. Did you format your SD card through the Droid? I'm about to start school so my responses will be shorter and not very fast.

Sorry all you do for a rom is to download just like before put on your SD card and install through recovery

ok i downloaded the rom on my SD card and booted into recovery and when i select install rom from sd card its saying

(no tar archives found)

Ok so this means 1 thing to me
Your recovery was not flashed correctly I would make another post saying recovery tar file not found help or something.
