Both a friend of mine and I got our phones yesterday and can't get past this step for whatever reason. I am running Windows XP 32 bit, and he is running Windows Vista or 7 (I don't recall which) 64 bit.

Both of us have tried numerous times to get this to work, and every time we run "adb devices" in a command prompt we get

"List of devices attached" then a couple of blank lines, and then the command prompt!

    Any ideas?

Figured out my problem, I was using a USB cable from an old phone and the plastic housing was too "fat" and didn't allow the USB plug to get seated well enough. Kind of weird though, because the phone would charge, just wouldn't be recognized by my computer.

Still haven't figured out my friend's problem, even though he is experiencing the same symptoms that I was.

Also, he is using Vista 64 bit.

    thank you kind, sir..

this might sound crazy.. but this was actually easier to follow than the "one-click root method"

    no such directory error.

    At the "
    cat /sdcard/busybox > ./busybox

There is an error that the folder or directory does not exsist.
I stopped there and did a battery pull.

Am I missing something? I re-read the post..and on down in case you mentioned it later.

    Thanks!

My root also went away after the update and now I can't get past step three on the rooting process following this guide.... (the one where you have to wait to be kicked out of adb shell)

Is anyone else having this issue and if so is there a fix coming?

MrDroid, thank you much. I had a BB Tour last, and there isn't a whole lot to play with there. The Droid seemed like the logical direction to go and I didn't want another M$ POS. My wife's is an X so when my time came do I got mine.

From the minute I got it, Ive been following all the threads on anything Droid. The rooting issue was the toughest to get into my head. I can follow directions, but everything I read up until finding your post just didn't have enough info. Yours was the best of breed, so to speak.

The last piece I ended up exiting, to c:\rootfiles to run the last piece before I rebooted. I got success without an issue.

I rebooted, and then ran Root explorer and got root without a problem.

Again thanks for a great post. I hope I can do more now as I learn the way of Linux.

The titanium backup paid is worth it for FREEZE alone. No removing or renaming. Just long click and choose freeze. It's a great way to remove bloat. Stops all of it from running.

I'm not sure if this has been asked. Will the phone get the 2.2 update (when available) if the phone has been rooted?? I've seen this question thrown around and never received an answer. Thank.

At the end of this section, I plugged my phone into a USB port in the back of my PC after running the SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones_x86.exe file. Nothing is happening, I didn't get a message saying the drivers were successfully installed. I've waited for 10 min. What should I do next?

It works. The best process is to set your phone back to stock, run the update then run the root process again.
