Okay, I have decided that I want to wrap my head around all of this. I consider myselkf pretty tech savvy having had a D1 and an Incredible, comfortable with ADB and all that good stuff. I want to try my hand and compiling some roms and what not, but I keep finding ambiguous information. My first step is reformatting my pc and dual booting with Ubuntu, would this be a positive step in the right direction? Aside from Ubuntu, and the Android SDK is there anything else I need to get set up? Thanks in advance for the help.

you can do that....or you could build a virtual Ubuntu system and run it only when working on your ROM. That's what I do, run Ubuntu in a virtual machine and compile there....

Resources....I have a pretty thorough guide to building AOSP (basic guide to get you started...) on my site in my signature.....
